Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs) — sometimes called “Assisted Living” or “Board and Care”  — are non–medical facilities that provide room, meals, housekeeping, supervision, storage and distribution of medication, and personal care assistance with basic activities like hygiene, dressing, eating, bathing and transferring for persons 60 years of age and older.

Assisted living falls somewhere between an independent living community and a skilled nursing facility in terms of the level of care provided. If the person in your care is beginning to need help with the basic activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, walking, managing medications, toileting, and eating) — or expects to need that help down the line — she may find this support at a good assisted-living community.

Assisted living care is typically provided in long-term residential facilities, where mostly elderly residents live and receive daily care and services from on-site staff. Unlike skilled nursing care, assisted living does not include medical care services (such as managing catheters, IVs or dressing wounds). If an older adult has a serious medical condition that requires specialized care, assisted living may not be the right choice, although some assisted-living communities do have specialized wings that provide skilled nursing or Alzheimer’s care.
